The first Christmas Trees in the United States are also claimed by conflicting stories. Some say that a Hessian solider put up a Christmas Tree in 1777 while he was in prison. This was in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The first christmas tree in America is also claimed by the town of Easton, Pennsylvania where German settlers are said to have set up a Christmas Tree. There is yet another story about the first Christmas Tree in America. In 1821 Matthew Zahm of Lancaster Pennsylvania recorded setting up a Christmas tree.  

August Imgard on Wooster Ohio is recorded as being the first to make decorating the Christmas Tree with candy popular. The National Confectioners Association actually credits August as the first to ever put candy canes on a Christmas Tree.
