There are many stores as to the beginning of Valentines day and how all this love tradition started. The one that seems the most interesting is the story of the Lupercalia Festival.

The month of February was commonly considered a time of purification and the official beginning of spring around 270 AD. This was a time when people would clean out their homes and sprinkle salt and spelt around to aid in the cleaning process.

The festival would begin on February 15th when the Luperci, Roman priests, would come together in a cave. Once there they would sacrifice a dog for purification and a goat for fertility. The boys of the area would then cut the goat hide into strips and then dip them in sacrificial blood. They would then run around town and slap the women and crops with the strips. This was a good thing for the women because it was believed the blood would make them more fertile in the coming year.

That same day all the single women in the area would put their names into a urn. The single men of the city would then draw names out of the urn and would be paired up with the women they each choose for the next year. More often than not these pairings resulted in marriages. 

Around 498 AD Pope Gelasius declared the lottery system un Christian and outlawed it. He also declared February 14th St. Valentines Day.

St Valentines day was also believed to be the first day of the mating season for birds. This gave it a symbol for romance.
